Birmingham Community Matters
Birmingham Community Matters (BCM)
Everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to teach
When setting up, running or growing a small community group, we know it can be hard to find the information you need. BCM is a charity, started in 2016, which helps to overcome this problem for groups across Birmingham.
At our events and one-to-one sessions, you can work through questions with people who have lots of experience (our volunteer 'BCM helpers').
Maybe you want to explore the best structure for your group? Or find effective ways to secure funding, recruit volunteers or develop policies? Perhaps you have a vision for a brilliant community activity, and need support to get started?
By listening to your ideas and challenges, and coming up with simple next steps with you, BCM can boost the success of your Birmingham group.
BCM helpers always discover something new too. That's why we call BCM a 'peer learning network' and have the motto: Everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to teach.

Bvsc - Community Champions
There are many individuals doing great work to address issues, increase awareness and bring about changes for the better of communities and society at large. In doing so they are often building great skills and experience. However, there are those who are less experienced and would benefit from some training that would help them in leading change and championing a cause. On the other hand, you may simply want to refresh your skills and share your experiences with other like-minded individuals doing similar work.
If this is you, BVSC will be running a training programme for the VCFSE sector that in the New Year.
BVSC is supporting Birmingham City Council to develop the role of champions and their community connections.
Training will help community leaders to:
- Increase capability to interact and communicate information and guidance that is accessible to diverse communities
- Build stronger relationships and engagement between communities, groups and the local authorities
- Encourage more mutual aid
The Training Programme will be aimed at:
- Community leaders across Birmingham
- Diverse participants in terms of age, ethnicity and cultural background, and socioeconomic demographics
- Existing Bolder Healthier Champions, as well as other key community members who would benefit from the training.
- Wards within Birmingham that require greater involvement of community leaders.
- Existing champions willing to transition to becoming community connectors, helping to reduce health inequalities that exist throughout Birmingham.

Our services support children and families throughout the country. We provide therapeutic services to help children move on from abuse, as well as supporting parents and families in caring for their children.
Safeguarding children and child protection
All organisations that work with or come into contact with children should have safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure that every child, regardless of their age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, has a right to equal protection from harm.
Setting up and following good safeguarding policies and procedures means children are safe from adults and other children who might pose a risk. This includes voluntary and community organisations, faith groups, private sector providers, as well as schools, hospitals and sports clubs.
What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
Safeguarding means:
- protecting children from abuse and maltreatment
- preventing harm to children's health or development
- ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
- taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.
Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.

Volunteer It Yourself (Viy)
We help young people do #SomethingConstriuctive, challenging them to learn trade and employability skills by helping to fix local community spaces and places in need of essential repairs and improvements.
How does it work?
Volunteering with VIY is like a free work experience opportunity.
It's pretty simple – young people volunteer on a VIY project, where we're renovating a vital community space in need of maintenance or improvement. They're mentored and supported to work alongside professional tradespeople to complete the project as a team on site, as well as developing key life skills together.
They also have the opportunity to gain City & Guilds Entry Level 3 accreditations in skills like carpentry, painting & decorating, health & safety, tiling and brickwork.
We generally work with young people aged 14-24 (some age ranges may vary per programme), who may be NEET (not in education, employment or training), or deemed at risk of becoming so, including young people with special educational needs and/or a disability.
Why volunteer with VIY?
As well as boosting young people's skills, all through free volunteering opportunities, we're also passionate about the power of volunteering at any age. Volunteering on a local project, from just one day, to multiple days/weeks, in your community can help to:
- Build better places and spaces to help local people and communities thrive
- Share skills and experience with young people looking for positive next steps in their lives
- Boost your health and wellbeing (volunteering is proven to bring a whole load of benefits)
- Build on your own skills (and maybe learn new ones!)
- Meet and have a great time with new people and in new places
Volunteer with us
Click this LINK to go to the VIY volunteer registration form, to demonstrate your employability skills all whilst gaining trade specific skills. You can also find us on the 'Volunteering and Paid Work' tab on Skills 360.
We also encourage adults from the community we're supporting to volunteer their time with us – you may be a parent of a VIY learner, a member/volunteer of the community space we're renovating or simply looking for volunteering opportunities in your area.
Mental Health Champions
1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem in any given year. Research shows that being active improves our mental health and reduces our risk of developing depression by up to 30%, as well as playing a big role in supporting mental health recovery.
Over the past 2 years Sport Birmingham have been working closely with Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust and our evaluation partner, Newman University to deliver Moving Lives Healthy Minds, a social recovery project for over 25's, diagnosed with Severe/Enduring ill mental health. Initial findings from the evaluation show the positive impact that participation in physical activity within a community setting has on service users confidence and social skills, as well as providing a sense of achievement and feeling of acceptance and normality within a group setting.
With our partners, Birmingham Mind, Sported, Living Well Consortium, Places Leisure, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust and Aston Villa Foundation we are launching the Mental Health Champion Programme:
- To help raise awareness of Mental Health across Clubs/Organisations in the City.
- Support clubs/organisations to increase their knowledge, understanding and confidence in having positive conversations around Mental Health.
- Support referrals from professional organisations into local sport and physical activity opportunities and provide clubs/organisations with the knowledge to refer into professional services if required.
- Advocate the benefits of Sport and Physical Activity for maintaining and improving mental health.

The Well Hq
We're Baz, Bella and Emma – the coach, the GP and the scientist. Independently, all three of us have worked with women for decades – training athletes, teaching body literacy and trying to smash the taboos that block progress. Serendipity brought us together in 2018 and we joined forces.
Puberty and menopause, biology and psychology – data and research on how women work and function are largely missing from the health and fitness disciplines. As a result, societal understanding isn't where it needs to be. It's a situation we need to rectify. Yesterday.
The Well is built on cutting-edge science, expertise and experience. Through community, resources and support for women and those who work closely with women, we can bridge the knowledge gap. We can become the architects of our own health, happiness and performance.

- What We Do
We train, equip and support community sports clubs, organisations and volunteers to provide inclusive programmes, unleashing their potential to transform the lives of underserved young people in their local communities.
This work is either place based (Changing Places) or sport focussed (Changing Sports). All the clubs we support are invited to join our Inclusive Club Network.
We then use the expertise gained through this work to effect system wide change.
Digital Unite
Digital Unite are an award-winning social enterprise. We've worked with hundreds of organisations that have supported thousands of people to achieve digital inclusion and enable change.
When Emma Weston set up the company in the 1990s, the internet was only available on dial-up and "digital exclusion" was a niche problem thought only to affect the elderly who hadn't grown up with the technology. Over the decades, we've seen it become more crucial and complex, as our society increasingly becomes "digital first" and more people are at risk of being left behind by this transformation.
Working to end the digital divide
We bring:
- Experience: we've spent more than 25 years in digital inclusion. From big picture theories to small, practical solutions, we know this area through and through.
- Expertise: we've spent decades honing and refining what makes Digital Champions programmes succeed. We know our products deliver, how to tailor them to fit your needs and how to support you to make your project happen.
- Innovation: we're always looking at how to build on what we do, from the sectors we work with, to the way we deliver. If your project doesn't fit our current models, get in touch and we'll see if we can work together to create something that does.
- Commitment: we want your project to succeed, and we'll do whatever we can to make that happen, in a friendly and collaborative way.
About Digital Champion Programmes
Our training is based on a model that helps your staff or volunteers learn how to help others.
How does it work?
It's hard to generalise as the programme is so adaptable. But in general:
- We train people in your organisation to become Digital Champions.
- They get the confidence, skills and resources they need to teach digital skills.
- The Champions then help other people to learn digital skills, so they can thrive in a digital world.
We don't train your end learners. We train your Champions. And each one can go onto help hundreds of other people.
Birmingham Children's Trust Apprentices
Who we are
Birmingham Children's Trust exists to make a positive difference for children, young people and families in the city.
We used to be called Children's Services and be run by Birmingham City Council. For a long time Birmingham needed to do much more to support disadvantaged children and young people in the city and make sure they were safe.
We have made many important improvements – listening to and learning from others, improving our social work practice and supporting our staff to do their jobs well. We became a Children's Trust in April 2018 to help us accelerate these changes.
We were last inspected by Ofsted in 2023. In April 2023 we were recognised by Ofsted as 'Good' (see news release here).
Our Trust is owned by, but independent from, Birmingham City Council.
Our success will mean:
- healthy, happy, resilient children living in families.
- families able to make positive changes.
- children able to attend, learn and achieve at school.
- young people ready for and contributing to adult life.
- children and young people safe from harm.
What we do
We work with more than 10,000 children and young people in our city every day. It is our job to work with the most disadvantaged children and young people of Birmingham and keep them safe, happy and healthy.
We work with care and compassion to listen to what they need and involve them in the decisions that affect them. We focus on the strengths that exist in every family and use them to bring about positive change. We understand, too, that everyone's needs are different. So we structure our services in a way that means we can adapt to what's right for every person.
We only spend money where it counts. And we do all we can to encourage schools, health professionals and the police to work together.
When we work as one team in our city, young people are most likely to thrive.
